My Blue Sky Alpacas Scoop Neck Vest and I think I like it. I'm wearing it today to work. I had my son take a picture of me before we left - great that he's old enough to do things like that now. Anyway, I love the color and it worked out great since I have two blouses with the same color blue in it as the vest. So let's get into the details.

Pattern: Aforementioned Scoop Neck Vest

By: Blue Sky Alpacas (bought via kpixie)

Yarn: Moda Dea Washable Wool

Needles: Size 7

I didn't really make any modifications from the pattern other than working in the round vs. making a front and a back. I didn't do the bind offs on the shoulder as they were called for (which may be why the shoulders don't sit exactly right) , I just bound off all stitches together. I don't like binding off in steps and need to find a new way to do this for armholes and shoulders. Any ideas?

Overall, this was a very simple pattern to follow and I would recommend it.

Another New Look

Okay, so I'm probably the last to know this but I just found the little button that allows you to customize the header of your blog. WHAT FUN! Found this image when I googled yarn and stretched it to fit. Hope I'm not breaking any blogging/internet rules by using this photo. Anyway, the Scoop Neck Vest has stalled because I'm waiting for my 16" size 7 circulars to arrive in the mail. I've also decided not to finish the sweater version of Juliet. I tried it on and it would probably be cute but after knitting one for me and one for my neice, I need a break from the pattern. So while I wait for my needles I started Wicked. I'm trying the cardigan version started by Flint Knits that's the photo up above) but can't seem to find good detailed instructions so I'm winging it. and I'm using Elann Sonata (gifted to me from my fabulous Secret Pal). I've never used 100% cotton before and have my doubts that it will work for a garment but if I don't like the way it works up I have a pattern for a purse that would suit this yarn perfectly.

Various Stages

It's been quite some time since I've posted. That doesn't mean that I haven't been knitting. Since the holidays I have worked on a cable purse for my friends 50th birthday (complete but forgot to take photos before I gave it to her), Juliet for my niece, a sweater version of Juliet for me (incomplete, see below), and the Scoop Neck Vest from Blue Sky Alpacas for me (incomplete). Acutally the vest was completed but the bust area didn't fit right so I ripped it back to just under the bust and revised it a bit.

Aside from my knitting, my life has been very busy. I don't usually blog about anything personal but for any of you who sometimes stop by and have children, maybe you can offer some words of wisdom. I have an 8 1/2 year old son. Good student, good kid, stubborn as hell, and he's driving us a bit crazy right now. He just doesn't seem to want to put effort into doing anything extra. For example, he loves sports and wants to be good at them. He attends practice for the sport du jour but when my husband asks him on an off day if he wants to practice my son says no. Or if my husband tries to give him advice about how to do something better we hear "I know, I know." More importantly, school work -- OY trying to get that child to write is worse than pulling teeth. I would like to see some more motivation from him - I want him to want to try harder or want to attempt to get better. Is this just typical 8 - 9 year old boy behavior? Are we expecting too much? Or do you have some recommendations??????

New Year, New Look

Not much to choose from on Blogger but I thought for the New Year I'd give the Blog a little makeover. Lots of knitting going on. Nothing terribly exciting. Juliet was such as big hit, I've been caught up in knitting two more - one for my niece and one as a sweater for moi. Also knitting - though had to put it aside for now - the U neck vest from Blue Sky Alpacas. Once I'm done with niece number 2's Juliet, I will start on a hoodie pullover for niece number 3.

Meanwhile, Mom was kind enough to knit one of the projects for me that I've had in my queue for a while -- the Drops Design cardigan. And I LOVE HER! I have to say that this is the first sweater that I've made in a long time that I feel really good about. I had started Juliet with Simply Soft and had the wrong gauge and just messed it up. So I had some Bernat Softee Chunky Twist in my stash and it was perfect. The colors are fun and it fits like a dream. I did the version where the garter stitch was just to the underarm. I thought it might make me look fat but instead it just looks tre chic. I didn't like the open look on the pattern so I made shorter button loops and like it much better. Here's a close-up of the buttons. I like Juliet so much, I may have to make another.

Meanwhile, I also finished the Spicy Tee from Fitted Knits. I do like this but not as much as Juliet. Actually, I had purchased the Softee Chunky Twist to make a long-sleeve version of the Spicy Tee. But when my first Juliet attempt failed, I decided to use the Twist for Juliet.

Currently on the needles: A scarf from some clearance yarn I bought at Joann's, The Blue Sky Alpacas Scoop Neck Vest, and coming soon - a Wicked Cardigan using the Wicked pattern that my SP sent. My fabulous Secret Pal has sent another package and it was a wonderful surprise. Unfortunately, my camera is on the fritz but here was the big surprise in my package:

Yup, it's the the new "Book of Yarn" and it is great. I love knitting books but only have two (now). Also in the package was a beautiful necklace and stitch marker set (did you make those yourself SP?), a fun yarnish magnet (my frig is filled with notes and calendars so this definitely came in handy), and a cute little chicks with sticks pin. My Secret Pal has made my first experience with SPs really fun and fantastic. I can't wait to find out who she is???? Thanks again SP! Hope you have a fabulous T-giving!

Down on Knitting

So, I finished my version of Juliet. It isn't good. It looks sort of cute but my gauge was all off and it came out too small. I can't remember the last time I made a sweater that came out well enough for me to really want to wear it. Here's my rundown:

Green Gable - first attempt at a top-down sweater - made the armholes too tight and sweater was too short - gave it to my mom.

Regine - looked good at first but didn't like the way the neck came out - ultimately frogged it and made a baby sweater out of the yarn.

Leaf T - too tight - gave it to a co-worker

Scatter - actually, that one came out fine - long enough - not too tight but not thrilled with the neckline - I do wear it sometimes.

Fifi - came out fine but didn't like the yarn (Cotton Ease) and didn't like the shape in the front.

U Vest - gauge was off, too tight - frogged - still haven't done anything with the yarn.

Antropolgie Inspired Capelet - tried making some changes - didn't like.

Juliet - gauge was off - didn't follow directions well because I wanted the body to be a bit less poofy - too tight.

Now I'm finishing the Spicy Fitted T and so far it looks good but we'll see what happens.

SP11 Strikes Again

IMG_0914
Originally uploaded by maxmom1963

Am I the luckiest person or what? Here's the latest package from my Secret Pal. Not only did she send me yummy chocolate covered almonds (my favorite! - I'll admit I've already eaten half the bag- YIKES), a great Zephyr Girls pattern - Wicked - I've wanted to try that one, and some great Zephyr stitch markers....BUT...she is so sweet she even included knitted hats for my two favorite men (husband and son) and some football cards for my son. Here they are wearing their hats. My son, who never wears hats, didn't want to take it off. And he felt so special to receive a gift. He told me to tell my friend, thank you....so Secret Pal, thank you from him and from all of us!

Now for some knitting news. Well, my Secret Pal sure knows me well because I'm currently knitting a Zephyr pattern - Juliet. Here's a shot of it in progress though you may not recognize it because I decided to knit the bottom in plain knit instead of doing the lace pattern. No reason really, I just felt like some mindless knitting. Oh, and the color is more of a brick color then what it looks like here.

The Postman Cometh

 IMG_0893
Originally uploaded by maxmom1963
Well it has arrived...my very first Secret Pal package EVER! I hate to post without photos because I like to see photos on other people's blogs and just assumed that's how everyone felt. So here's what's going on:

- I purchased Fitted Knits after seeing so many beautiful finished knits of others. I am almost done with this lovely knit -- he Back-to-School U-neck Vest. I'm knitting it in teal with Moda Dea's washable wool (which I've never used). It's coming out nice and I hope it looks as good as everyone else's.

- In between, I found a pattern for the Saartje's booties. My husband had a baby shower to go to (he's a teacher) so I made two pair. They are the cutest things. Photo to come.

- I finished my version of a cross between the Anthropologie Inspried Capelet and the Blue Sky cropped cardi. Just sewed up the sleeves last night and I think it's really cute. Again, photo to come.

So my next post should be pretty photo heavy. Tune in.

Love it or Hate It?

I just came across this pattern on Lion Brand's web site and I can't figure out if I love it or hate it? I started using Paton's Katrina because the yarn it called for was Rowan Calmer and everyone talked about the stretchiness of Calmer. I didn't want to spend that much money for yarn and had some Katrina in my stash so I decided to go for it. Well, I had many attempts because the gauge of the Katrina was difficult to judge. I actually finished it once except for the sleeves but ended up ripping it back - I don't remember why - got carried away and threw in the towel. But I was determined to make this sweater so I pulled out some Cottonease from my stash and made this. The Cottonease is a bit bulky and doesn't have the stretch that the pattern calls for but I still like the sweater. I definitely think it's more of a jeans sweater than a work sweater. The only thing that truly bothers me about this sweater is the point that it comes to in the front. The picture doesn't show it too much because I keep pulling it down but left to its own, it will come to a rounded point in the center. I've already heard from my pal and she seems great. I promised her I would post answers to my questionaire today so here goes:

What is/are your favorite yarn/s to knit with?
Generally, I like cotton blends - I usually knit with cotton/acrylic blends like Shine and Cottonease but have wanted to try Touche, Calmer, and Cotton Fleece.
What fibers do you absolutely *not* like?
I don't like scratchy wools - any wool would have to be a blend because my skin is very sensitive to it.
What do you use to store your needles/hooks in?
Okay, don't laugh. I store my needles (all circular) in a ziploc bag.
How long have you been knitting & how did you learn?
I've been knitting, off and on for 28 years. My mom taught me when I was 16 - yes that makes me 44. YIKES!
Would you consider your skill level to be beginner, intermediate or advanced?
Though I've been knitting for a long time I would consider myself intermediate.
Do you have an Amazon or other online wish list?
Not really
What's your favorite scent?
I don't have any. Not a big candle scenty person.
Do you have a sweet tooth?
Moderate
Favorite candy?
Chocolate covered almonds and Strawberry Twizzlers
What other crafts or Do-It-Yourself things do you like to do?
Nothing. Except I promised my son I would make him one of those no-sew fleece blankets.
Do you spin?
Nope
What kind of music do you like?
Different kinds - mostly top 40, oldies (40s, 50s, 60s, some 70s) Though my husband has also gotten me into the Grateful Dead and Elvis Costello
Can your computer/stereo play MP3s? (if your buddy wants to make you a CD)
Nope
What's your favorite color(s)?
Blue, grey, tan, yellow
Any colors you just can't stand?
Not big on purple
What is your family situation?
I'm married with one 8 year old son
Do you have any pets?
One cat - he is beautiful and very sweet but I could do without the hairballs and furniture scratching
Do you wear scarves, hats, mittens or ponchos?
Sort of, but I have a ton of scarves and hats. Mittens and ponchos - not so much.
What is/are your favorite item/s to knit?
Pullovers and I'd like to start some cardigans
What are you knitting right now?
Fifi - for the upteenth time. I had it just about complete and through operator error was forced to rip it back. I've since restarted with different yarn.
Do you like to receive handmade gifts?
Sure
Do you prefer straight or circular needles?
Circular . Though this is a new obsession for me. I never use to know how to use circulars and then I started taking the bus to work and found that out of necessity I needed to learn. Now, I can't use straight needles.
Bamboo, aluminum, plastic?
Love the look of the bamboo needles but don't like working with them. I generally use the plastic but the better plastic not the old pink ones my grandma used to use.
Do you own a yarn winder and/or swift?
Nope
How old is your oldest UFO?
Right now it's the Sunkist Cardi that I started about 6 months ago. It's almost done I just have to finish the sleeves.
What is your favorite holiday?
Thanksgiving
Is there anything that you collect?
Nope - just yarn and patterns
Any books, yarns, needles or patterns out there you are dying to get your hands on?
Oh, where to begin. I love Wendy Bernard's patterns, there are beautiful Kim Hargreaves cardigans that I love, Rowan patterns. As for yarns - see above (Calmer, Cotton Fleece, Touche). Needles - circular size 3's.
What knitting magazine subscriptions do you have?
None but I drool over Interweave Knits.
Are there any new techniques you'd like to learn?
I'd love to figure out short rows - how to pick them up, how to place them correctly and use them in a pattern that doesn't call for them.
Are you a sock knitter?
Nope, tried it and thought I liked it but then - not so much
What are your foot measurements?
Not sure what you're looking for but I wear a size 7 1/2 shoe
When is your birthday?
July 26
Are you on Ravelry? If so, what's your ID?
Yes and I LOVE it. I was thrilled the day that I got my invitiation. I've had several stops and starts. I'm using Paton's Katrina - some from stash and some from a sweater that I frogged. Anyway, I initially CO 120 even though I'm the medium size. After separating the sleeves, I tried it on. It seemed a bit too small. So I ripped and CO 140. I tried it on again after I reached the arms and it seems better. In addition to not getting gauge in the width, I'm also falling short in the length. But I didn't want to add anymore width so I just did several repeats of the last few rows. Now I'm on the bodice and I hope this is correct. The Katrina is somewhat textured so it looks as thought he cables are hard to see in the photo but in person you can see it much better.

Bella-isimo

Here is my finished Bella Blouse from the IK Summer issue. I did knit it in the round because I hate seaming and it was easy to adjust the pattern.

- I love the neck insert and the bottom band but again left off the inserts on the sleeve. I know others are making it with the inserts and I'm sure it will look great.

- The pattern took me a bit to get but after a few rips and restarts, I finally got it. Though the yo at the beginning was frustrating and I eventually turned it into yo on the knit side at the end and then just slipped the stitch on the purl side.

- In total, I think the sweater took me about a month to complete.

- I would highly recommend this pattern and I think it looks more flattering on in person than in the photo.

Non-original, Original Sweater

My last post asked the question, "When is a sweater an original design?" I asked the question because I was knitting a sweater using the top of one pattern and the stitch from another for the bottom. Well, here is the result:

The top is sort of from Stephanie Japel's "Simple Knitted Bodice." Basically, I used the measurements for the V portion from that pattern but needed to change the gauge. Instead of the lace portion on the short-sleeve version, I just did simple 1X1 rib. Then for the body, I used a stitch pattern that I found from a child's cardigan ("Tater's Cotton Cardi). So I ask, is this an original design or just a modification to two sweaters?

Anyway, here are the specs and what I would do differently next time:

Yarn: Lion Brand Microfiber in Black

Needles : Size 4 circular

Knitted from the top down

I really do like the way this sweater came out. The few things that I would do differently:

1. The bust and sleeves are a bit too big so I'd change my numbers there. Though in the past every top-down raglan I've made, the armhole has been too small so this is a nice change. To help the issue I decreased once every ten stitches around the armhole before starting the ribbing. It pulled it in somewhat but...

2. Instead of doing a band of garter stitch just under the bust, I would change it to moss stitch because I think it lays nicer on the body.

Anyway, here are some more photos and a close-up of the lace. Let me know your thoughts. Thanks.!

A Non-original Original

So when is a sweater an original design vs. a tweaking of a pattern? I Hope!

I have knitted the Green Tea Raglan from the current issue of IK four times. The first time I started on straight needles and finished the back and got half way up a sleeve. Looked at it and said, this would be so much more fun if I did this on circular needles from the top down. So I frogged it and started over. Figured out the stitch count, started on circulars, got to the join, tried it on....way way too big. Frogged it, sized it down started over. Got to the join again, way too big. Frogged it and thought maybe three strikes and you're out. Last night had insomnia and got to thinking. Maybe I'll use the stitch count from my Green Gable which fits well and go down a size in needles. Well, that's where I am now and I'm keeping my fingers crossed. But I promise you, if this is too big, I'm done!

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://knitsawrap.blogspot.com/2007/03/4th-times-charm-i-hope.html' title='4th Times a Charm? I've never knit anything from this magazine before but the Spring previews looked so great I just had to buy it. There are several sweaters in there that I like including the Cable Down Raglan and the Bonsai Tunic. But I've decided to start with this, the Green Tea Raglan. I don't plan on making the belt though. Also, I started this sweater and finished the back and got halfway up one sleeve. Then I thought, wait, I can make this from the top down. I've been making top down sweaters lately because I'm too lazy to sew the pieces together. Anyway, the pattern gives stitch numbers for the top of the sleeves and the front and back. I figure if I cast on that amount plus a few extra stitches for raglan increases, I should be okay. I'm having a few challenges but nothing bad. We'll see if this experiment works. Instead of casting on and casting off stitches for the tie, I picked up three stitches and knitted i-cords. I think I might use this pattern for the bottom.

Ramblings

It's been a while since posting. Lots of Christmas knitting all done and distributed. I have a few projects brewing - the Anthropolgie Inspired-Caplet for me is 3/4 done (made one for a friend's daughter for Christmas which came out very cute), a toddler cardigan for my friend's new daughter who she is adopting from VietNam. I'm following the pattern for Tater's Cotton Card - hope it fits. Also just finished this scarf which I sort of made for someone at work but ended up keeping it. Love the colors, love the yarn - Lion Brand Jiffy Thick and Quick. A few more things:

- So excited, I won a stash giveaway by one of my favorite bloggers . I won her leftover Rowan Handknit Cotton DK - 3 skeins. Can't wait, I've never used such expensive yarn before. Now I'll have to figure out what to make with it.

- Like everyone else, I'm loving the Spring Interweave Knits - the cable down raglan from Stephanie Japel is gorgeous.

- And finally, I'm still working on hubby's blanket. I'm using Homespun on size 10 1/2 needles and it's slow going. Wish I would've picked thicker yarn. Oh well.

Unconventional Baby Blanket

IMG_0751
Originally uploaded by maxmom1963.

Haven't posted in a while but that doesn't mean that there hasn't been some knitting going on ....a lot in fact. Unfortunately since most have been gifts I've been knitting them and getting them out the door before I remember to take photos. Here's one that I did for one of the many pregnant ladies in our office. She's having a boy and I just happen to have some leftover Homespun in, what I think are, some very complimentary colors. I've also made 4 ballband dishcloths, 2 baby sweaters, 1 baby hat....and a partridge in a pear tree. (not really but it was in keeping with the season). I also made an Anthropologie-inspired capelet (found on Craftster) for a friends daughter. But blast it was too small so I'm making it again. Once I finish her's, I want to make one for myself. Still on the docket, a hat a scarf set for my friend's twin girls who are coming to visit next week...better get cracking.

Moving On

Well, I guess the Secret Pal thing just wasn't meant to be. It seems I fell into somewhat of a black hole and my experience was less than wonderful. Oh well, you gotta try new things. I am disappointed because I was really looking forward to the exchange - it seemed like people were having so much fun and meeting new blogging friends. Anyway, putting that behind me...I've been knitting lots but haven't felt like knitting sweaters. I found - I know I'm late to the party - the Mason Dixon book and I love it. So far I've made a dishcloth and the baby kimono. I want to try the log cabin blanket and the rug but I've got a few Christmas gifts to do first. I did see this sweater and may buy the pattern when it's out....it's very cute - similar to the Simple Bodice but still cute:

Anyway, I know I owe a lot of photos and will work on that this weekend.

That's a Wrap

Felting Fiend

It's my new love - felting. I will have the pattern! You know what I mean, nothing in particular wrong but everything bothering you kind of moods. Well, this morning I finally felt better. Fall is in the air and we opened our windows in the house and the feeling is great! To top it off, I checked my email today and had my first message from my Secret Pal, yeah! I couldn't believe it. When I first signed up for my very first Secret Pal back in September, I had no idea how this all would work. Would I really get a Secret Pal or would they just forget about me? Well, this first message comes a few days before the official start and I can't wait to see this unfold. Now I can't wait to start sending messages and packages to my Secret Pal spoilee.
Meanwhile, here is a photo of my first ever felted purse. This was so much fun to do, I can't wait to do more.
Pattern: The Little Coco Bag
Yarn: Paton's 100% Merino Wool - Red
I ended up using only two skeins and have one skein leftover. I bought a skein of grey to mix it together for my next one. It was so much fun knitting this and seeing it come together. It took two cycles through the machine with a pair of jeans. I even used the spin cycle and it helped it dry overnight. I shaped it over three pasta boxes and it came out perfect.

Penguins, Purses and Afghans, OH MY!

I've been knitting sweaters for myself, nonstop, since July. Well, it's time for a break. I'm in the middle of a long-sleeve version of Green Gable using Paton's Katrina and it is taking FOREVER! So, I'm putting it down for some instant gratification. But what to make.....hmmm. Socks? Tried that - not interested. How about a purse. Hmmm. Sounds interesting. So, this past weekend I bought some Patons Classic Wool and I'm going to try felting (or fulling) for the first time. I have 1/2 of it done but had to put that aside for a while too. You see, hubby and sonny just don't seem to get this knitting obsession. So my mom had a brilliant idea. She said, make something for them. Neither are sweater, hat, glove, or scarf boys so what to make, what to make. Little sonny (7 1/2) loves stuffed animals. So when I showed him a picture of Pascha from Knitty he fell instantly in love.
Amazing how all of a sudden it was very important for mommy to have knitting time. As for hubby, he's getting an afghan. I said I was going to make him one a while ago but never did. I find them boring. But, in the interest of making him something, I'll bite the bullet. I hope to make a quick knit using a combo of Bernat Softee Chunky and Lion Brand Homespun....gotta love those free shipping coupons at Joanns.

That's a Wrap

Simple Bodice - Simple Yarn

When I first saw this pattern I knew I had to make it. When I saw that there were not one but two knit alongs, I just knew I had to join. When I saw that there were a lot of people using the very pretty but VERY EXPENSIVE Tilli Thomas yarn, I knew that there was no way I could use it. So into my stash I went. I came up with some TLC Cotton Blend in lavendar. I'm almost done with the sweater and I LOVE IT - Tilli Thomas or no Tilli Thomas. It fits great. Only modifications I'm making is that I'm replacing the purl ridges with garter stitch (that's the all knit one, right? I always get them confused). I wanted the borders to lay flat and the purl ridges just seemed a bit puffy to me. I also raised the v-neck because I'd like to wear this without a cami.

Here it is....

I've folded back the one arm because I made it with the larger size needles and need to rip it out and redo on the smaller needles. I should be done this weekend and will be back with a modeled shot but I have tried it on several times and it really is a beautiful sweater. Enjoy knitting.

Needed a Change

I've decided to change the template of my blog. That being said, here is my finished Scatter and details:

Pattern: Scatter by Saunshine
Yarn: Schoeller Stahl Micro Cable
Needle Size: 5

I truly love the way this sweater came out. As soon as Saun posted it, I knew I had to make it. This was also my first time using yarn from Elann (what a great experience and pretty yarn). I had some trouble following the pattern once I started increasing - wasn't sure where to start the pattern (with the new stitches or after) so it might not look exactly like the original but I love it just the same. Also had problems getting the back and shoulders to measure - all due to me certainly no problem with the pattern. I love the shape of the neckline but again - I'm sure I did something wrong because parts of it roll even after pressing. But I do love it. My mom saw it and now plans on making one for herself. She said it looks like something you'd get in a boutique. Anyway, here are a few more detail shots and of course the modeled pose. Hubby was kind enough to play photographer. At first he kind of smirked at the idea that I'd be posting it but after two photos he said he'd take more if I didn't like how those came out. Aw.

Anyway, I enjoyed the yarn from Elann so much that I jumped on the Katrina bandwagon and bought some in Oyster. It has come to my attention, after making a few sweaters that don't really fit right (thank goodness for blocking), that I have been knitting the wrong size and have not been paying proper attention to my gauge swatches. For some strange reason I keep following patterns for size 34 or 36 when in actuality I am a 38. It hasn't been too bad because when I block my sweaters, I'm able to stretch them to a body hugging but not obscene size. Until my last sweater the Leaf T. It looks great on and in the photo but he arms and underarms are so tight that it practically cuts off my circulation. Well, as they say, the first part of recovery is actually admitting you have a problem. So, when I cast on Scatter, I made sure that I followed the sizing for the 38. Next problem, I didn't quite make gauge (as I'm using size 5 needles - though I tend to knit fairly loose) and didn't alter it. Fortunately, I tried it on the other day and it looks like I'll be okay. It's not quite done because I had to go back and order som additional yarn - another downside to not properly figuring out your gauge is not figuring out the proper amount of yarn to buy. Anyway, once I get the new yarn I will finish Scatter and post photos.

Meanwhile, I've cast on this Knitting Nature lovely . I've learned from my mistakes and have properly figured out the correct number of stitches BUT I'd like to make it longer and I'm not sure I can figure out how to work the front so that everything comes out right. So, I've joined the Knitting Nature KAL and hope to get some answers from those much wiser then me. Meanwhile, for the very few of you who visit, if you have any suggetions, I'm all ears!

That's a Wrap

Last of the Summer Knits

It's already late (almost late) July and I feel like the summer is fading fast. Living in the South (I'm really a Northerner) - schools start sooner (mid-August instead of after Labor Day). And while the weather is still warm through to Thanksgiving (sometimes), once my son heads back to school (the big second grader) I'm pretty much out of summer mode. But when Saunshine came out with this adorable top I just knew I had time for one more. I see this in silver. I think I'm going to use Microspun. Despite the bad reviews about splitting and not washing up well. The Green Gable I made for my mom is wearing very well and she says it feels great.

Meanwhile, I'm currently finishing up this little tank I hope it comes out as cute as it looks here. I'm using TLC Cotton Plus in lavender. I've finished the back and I'm one-third the way up the front.

After I complete my summer kniting it's on to - what I think will be my most challenging project yet - Ogee Tunic from Knitting Nature. I'm waiting to receive my copy from the library - I'm number one in the que and can't wait.

That's a Wrap

Raspberry Leaf T Complete

Here it is in all it's beauty...my Raspberry Leaf T.

Here's also a photo of me wearing it, sorry for the poor quality.

Here are are the details:

Pattern:
Leaf T by Knitting School Dropout
Yarn: TLC Cotton Plus in Hot Pink
Needles Size: 5
Modifications: Added a few rows of hip increases - Also finished the armholes and bottom off with a folded bottom (not sure what you call it but I first did this when I knit Nothin' but a Tshirt

I really do love this sweater and received lots of compliments when I wore it to work. These top-down raglan patterns are fun since there's no seaming. Though I do have a bit of a problem with the underarms being a tad too tight. All in all I'd recommend this pattern.

I definitely recommend the Cotton Plus yarn - for the price, it can't be beat. I see that many knitters over at the Sexy Knitters Club are using this yarn for their Tempting II sweaters and they're looking great.

My next project is a rib/cable tank. Check back soon for photos.

That's a Wrap

Raspberry Leaf T

Thanks one and all for your kind words about my completed Regine. I really did enjoy knitting it and I like the way it looks on (except for it being a tad short). Of course my mom was over last weekend and noticed that my front darts come up a little high - oh well, that's the beauty of handknit items I can just say - "Well that's how I wanted to make it." Of course you all know the truth.

So, it's on to my next knit. Okay, I cheated, I started this while I was sewing Regine together. So while it seems like I'm a fast knitter, it actually took me 2 weeks to finish this Leaf T (pattern found here. Here is an in progress shot - I'm actually wearing today but can't find anyone to take a photo but promise to post one soon along with all the knitty gritty details.

That's a Wrap.

Regine

I give you....Regine. I followed the pattern except for making the sleeves 3/4 length and I didn't do the short rows on the neckline - just couldn't figure it out. The other thing I changed on the neckline is that I brought it up and in a tad. I love the opened neckline on the original pattern but didn't feel comfortable with it that opened. When I put it on it comes just above where my cleavage would be if I had any and in from the sides a bit. I wish I had made it an inch or two longer and since I wasn't sure about what I was doing with the 3/4 length sleeves, I should've added a few stitches to make it a bit larger. Not in love with the way I set in the sleeves but I can live with it. All in all, I like this sweater and think I'll get a lot of wear out of it.

Ch-Ch-Changes

It must seem like I change my mind more than most people change their socks. I post a photo of my next project and before you know it...poof...I've changed my mind. Well, Eliza wasn't working out as well as I had hoped so...poof...I changed my mind. I was trying a seed stitch tank from last year's Vogue but that wasn't working out either so now I'm halfway done with the leaf-t shirt found at Knitting School Dropout. Found it while knit blog surfing and really like it. Anyway, long story short...I'm halfway done, loving it so far and will post an in progress photo later.

Also, Regine is done - still need to weave in the ends but will post photo of that later too.

That's a Wrap.

The Rain in Spain Stays Mainly in the Plain

A tip of the hat to "My Fair Lady" is an appropriate way to start this post. While Regine is in the process of being sewn together - clearly a nighttime job - I've moved on to my newest project. It's the Eliza Tank from Berroco. It's summertime and I wanted to knit up a cute little tank that would, hopefully, fly off the needles. I'm using Cotton Plus in Hot Pink - va va voom! I ordered Cotton Plus from Joann during a free shipment sale. My package arrived yesterday just in the nick of time for my morning bus ride. I also ordered Cotton Plus in lavendar and have my eye on the Krista tee from White Lies Design for that yarn. I have been eyeing that pattern for some time and was thrilled to see Elizabeth's finished Krista over at A Mingled Yarn

Anyway, I'll post photos soon of Regine and progress of my Eliza Tank. The front increases and decreases have come out much nicer than the back stitches - don't know why. I've made a slight adjustment to the neckline. While I love the plunge, I just think it's a bit too ready for prime time for me so I've raised it a bit. The back was done and this morning I finished the front while riding the bus to work. For the ride home, I plan on casting on for the sleeves. Now my big dilemna...I'm tyring to decide between long, short or 3/4" sleeves. I'm leaning towards 3/4" but we'll see. Will post some photos soon.

That's a Wrap

Mom's Microfiber Gable

Well, here it is - in progress - Mom's Microfiber Gable made with Lion Brand Microfiber in Turquoise (the photo makes it look a bit more blue-blue then it really is).

I had some problem with the sizing. Mom is smaller than I am and I was afraid to make her size after reading others issues with the small. But after casting-on and frogging 4 or 5 times, I think (hope) I got it right.

I love this yarn but it's not for the faint of heart. The yarn definitely lives up to it's reputation as a splitter! In the beginning I was a little frustrated with it but once I got the hang of it I was really fine with it and had few problems. It feels very much like cotton but a little spongey - in a good way. I think she'll enjoy wearing this - now I just have to get past the boring stockinette. I plan on adding hip increases and will probably finish it off with a hem bottom instead of the ribbing.

That's a Wrap.

We Interrupt This Program....

Still working on Regine and I think it's going to be nice - but after finishing my Lime Green Gable I decided to make one for mom for Mother's Day. She was going to give me yarn from a frogged sweater but I talked her into trying the Shapely T over at White Lies Designs. She's finished it using Knit Picks Shine and loves it so all is well. Anyway, was in the store and have been wanting to try Lion Brand's Micorfiber yarn. I know, I know, all the horror stories of splitting and the feel. Well, for all of you yarn snobs and non-snobs like moi I'm here to tell you that it does in fact split and it can be annoying. But, if I'm careful - and it's only an issue when I have to k2tog - then it's really not annoying at all. Also, it's actually working up quite nicely and is producing a bit dressier version of Gigi. I'm using tourquoise - which mom loves - it's a beatifully rich color and I think she'll like it. I don't expect to finish it in time for Mother's Day but I'm hoping to be far enough along so that she can try it on and make sure it fits before I finish it up. I'll post a photo in progress soon.

Meanwhile, I try to be a considerate knitter but sometimes it would be nice if others would think too. I take the bus to work sometimes and when I was working on Regine I was using size 5s. Well, I didn't have circulars so I used straight needles. Every day this same man would get on the bus, see that I was knitting and sit with me. Now, of course that's his right but THERE WERE 4 OTHER EMPTY SEATS ALL AROUND ME WHY COULDN'T HE HAVE SAT IN ONE OF THOSE!!! I suffered through two rows and then put it away and took a nap - but really! Anyway, I finally broke down and bought size 5 circulars so from now on we can co-exist on the bus without me feeling ill will toward him. Of course, today I was working on Gigi so it wasn't an issue and he did sit with me. But when I saw him get on the bus, I smiled and just knew he'd be sharing my seat. He did, I continued to knit and all was right with the world.

That's a Wrap.

Regine Progress

Things are coming along on Regine. There were plenty of stops and starts - just couldn't figure out the lace pattern (all me, the directions were pretty clear except for a missing * but other than that I just wasn't focusing). Anyway, I'm just about done with the back and will cast on for the front tonight. I'm using TLC Cotton Plus for the first time - Love this yarn - it's soft, works up beautifully and it's affordable! I plan on making the neckline a bit less plungey - I'm not as sexy as all that! And will probably make 3/4 length sleeves but that's more out of necessity because I don't think I'll have enough yarn. Anyway, photo update soon.

That's a Wrap.

Change of Plans

So my Green Gable is done and I haven't seen mom yet so I have some time to start a project before she gives me her yarn to make a Green Gable for her. Meanwhile, I set my eyes on the Korfu Pullover posted at Elann. After reading several reviews of Cotton Plus yarn, I decided to try it. (I am not even close to being a yarn snob). Anyway, the yarn is beautiful and works up very nice but the Korfu pattern well, not so much. The sweater is lovely and I'm sure there's nothing wrong with the pattern but it just wasn't working for me. So, after 8 stops and starts, I've admitted defeat and have moved on to a new pattern. Feast your eyes on this beauty.

Not sure why I couldn't find anyone who has tried this pattern, it's so lovely. I casted on last night during my son's baseball practice (had a few snickers from his coaches about "I thought only 80 year-old grannies knit" - how wrong they can be!)and am happy to say that it's coming along nicely. Will keep you posted on my progress.

That's a Wrap.

Green Gable Success

Here it is...my Lime Green Gable completed.

I love, love, love it and have to say a hearty THANK YOU to the ladies at Zephyr Style for designing such a wonderful sweater! I'm wearing it today at work and have to say that not only is it stylin' but it's also very comfortable. Showed my mom yesterday (a knitter herself and the person who taught me to knit). She loved it so much that she plans on frogging a sweater she just made for herself so that I can make one for her. Would I do anything different? Let's see ..... NO! Well, maybe. After doing two waist decreases, I would add one or two hip increases. When I first saw this pattern linked from Wendy's (Knit and Tonic) site, I knew I had to have it. I had never bought a pattern online and initially had some problem with the order but emailed Zephyr and Rachel was great in getting right back to me. Anyway, it's not quite done yet, still have to finish the sleeves. Oh and that spot on the left boob isn't a spot at all. If you click on the photo you'll see it all but disappears when you view the image a bit larger.

Some particulars:

PATTERN: (Obviously, the aforementioned Green Gable by Zephyr)
YARN: Knit Picks Shine in Light Green
NEEDLES: Size 4

Since I was using smaller needles and a lighter weight yarn than called for, I had to finagle the gauge and sizing a bit. I ended up using a combination of two sizes which probably explains why my neckline is higher than the pattern. But I acutally like it higher so it worked out just fine. I LOVED this pattern and enjoyed knitting it, especially the lacey top part. I've never done that before and I was simply amazed at how it was coming out. I enjoyed it so much that I've decided that for my next project I'm going to try this little number as seen at Elann.com:

That's a Wrap.

Let's Start At the Very Beginning....or so....

So, I've been knitting for quite some time but have just gotten back into it after a very long hiatus. I've been enthralled with all of the wonderful, fun, and informative knitting blogs out there. I can't believe how many talented writers, pattern designers, and great knitters there are out there.

As for me, I can't design a pattern but have done well, so far, following some lovely patterns from Grumperina (Picovoli), Blue Blog (Nothin' but a T-shirt) and CircusKnits (Green Gable). After about 6 months worth of lurking on those and MANY other sites, I've decided to come out of the closet and add my own blog to the ranks. In honor of the new blog, I've also decided to join my very first KAL. And while I'm almost done with it, I've decided to join the Green Gable KAL because in the interest of having a sense of accomplishment, I figure if I join the KAL when I'm almost done, I'll feel really good about myself rather than beating myself up for falling way behind.

So, anyway, I hope you'll drop by and leave some comments and welcome me into this fantabulous world of knitters!

That's a Wrap.
